Edge of Eternities landed a month ago, but some of its best cards seem to be late bloomers. As we reported yesterday, Haliya, Guided by Light went from zero to hero in the last couple of weeks, as players from two different MTG formats discovered how good she is. And Nova Hellkite is the headline today, soaring from the bulk bin into top-tier territory.
Like Haliya, Guided by Ligh, Nova Hellkite languished after release, then started a slow yet steady climbโฆ and now, after topping Orlando's Magic Spotlight: Planetary Rotation last weekend, this red dragon finally broke out, with near mint copies in the $3-$4 range after living under a buck not that long ago.

As is the case with the huge majority of new cards, Nova Hellkite dropped like a rock from its prerelease price and crashed into bulk-bin territory just a week after Edge of Eternities was out. But then it steadily rose during August from less than a buck to about $1.80 last week, to finally spike to nearly twice as much nowadays for near-mint copies in US markets:

The reason in this case is crystal clear: Results, plain and simple.
Mono-Red Aggro, aka Red Deck Wins, just won the Magic Spotlight: Planetary Rotation main event at SCG CON Orlando, defeating a field chock-full of Vivi Cauldron decks:
Brennan Royโs winning list maindecked three Nova Hellkite and a fourth copy in the sideboard (plus four Razorkin Needleheads; more about them in a bit!). And the other non-Vivi deck in the top eight was Marco Cammilluzzi's take on Mono-Red, with a full Nova Hellkite playset in the main deck:

Nova Hellkite in mono-red is hardly news for RDW lovers: It was being played as sideboard tech the very next day after Edge of Eternities was released, and versions with it in the main deck were taking down tournaments in the first half of August. But it was not so clear, until now, that RDW could steal Vivi's lunch and rise all the way to the topโฆ
card]Nova Hellkite[/card] has every right to be in the main deck.
As it's the case with another aggressive red staple from Duskmourn that is not Screaming Nemesis.
Razorkin Needlehead Dares You To Draw
Razorkin Needlehead is another success story this week, and in this case for even more reasons than Nova Hellkite. For starters, yes, itโs a centerpiece in the winning Orlando list: Razorkin Needlehead forces awkward sequencing for the Vivi Ornitier/Agatha's Soul Cauldron pilots, daring them to draw a card.
But what Standard players are learning now, Pioneer players already knew: Red Deck Win decks in that format have been using Razorkin Needlehead for quite a while now.
And, on top of that, this red creature from Duskmourn is also sought after in Commander decks:
EDHREC shows it showing up in about 3% all red-leaning decks, playing extremely well with punisher commanders like Nekusar, the Mindrazer, Ob Nixilis, Captive Kingpin, or Valgavoth, Harrower of Souls. And it even makes the cut sometimes into cEDH decks with Winota, Joiner of Forces or Ob Nixilis, Captive Kingpin.
This multi-format demand โ four-of in one of the best decks in Standard, competitive in Pioneer, plus broad EDH use โ has pushed Razorkin Needlehead from from about $4 a week ago, to about $6 in the last seven days. And if you look at the last 30 days, it went up by more than 100%:

What Will Happen With Nova Hellkite's and Razorkin Needlehead's Prices?

So, where do these cards go next? Red decks just went with an โagainst-the-fieldโ win in a massive Standard event, and are now following it with MTGO dominance. And although Razorkin Needlehead was already a solid card in Pioneer and Commander, it was not in Standard's radar โ which means that Standard players now jumping into the RDW hype train probably won't have a full playset yet.
Then again, as it's our usual caveat, this is not investment advice: Always do your own research, folks. Above all with cards as red-hot as these two!
