There are no teenagers in Magic. Well, at least not as a creature type (although according to Magic's Head Designer Mark Rosewater, teenagers almost became a thing in Unhinged).

But now that WotC has officially revealed that mutants, ninjas and turtles are officially coming to Magic next year, those other three creature types are seeing a lot of action in the MTG card market! We're one X-Men set away from mutants take center stage in MTG.

As we reported yesterday, ninjas are by far the most popular of those three creature types, and Magic's very own ninja turtle is already moving up in price:

TMNT's impact on mutants has thus far been subtler: If you just look at the price, you'd think nothing has happened. But when looking at the traded volumes, that's a whole different story… and one that may start reflecting in prices soon.

Magic's mutants are in a weird spot, when compared to ninjas. There are quite a lot more mutants than ninjas, and both creature types have one commander among the Top 20 most popular (Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow is a ninja, and The Wise Mothman is a mutant).

But mutants have a lot less support than ninjas – that's to say, there are a lot fewer cards that care about you playing mutants, versus those that reward you for playing ninjas. Just compare Yuriko to the Mothman: Yuriko wants you punching face with ninjas, while the Mothman doesn't give a rad about your creature types.

That may change next year with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. We may get a lot more mutants in Marvel products, given the importance of mutants in the Marvel multiverse.

At any rate, Magic players seem to be assuming that such will be the case, as reflected in the huge in number of traded copies for Jason Bright, Glowing Prophet this past weekend:

Jason Bright, Glowing Prophet‘s price did go up last weekend, and the increase was quite high in relative terms (from $0.12 to $0.24, so technically speaking a 100% spike). But the interesting story is the 200+ copies traded in a day, for a card that normally trades that much in a whole month. The huge supply managed to keep the price in check.

The reason is seems simple enough: Jason is one of the few cards right now that care about Mutants. And Jenova, Ancient Calamity is another:

Jenova, Ancient Calamity

Jenova draws you a card whenever a mutant dies during your turn, so if Donatello or another ninja turtle buys the farm, Jenova's ability will trigger. And, once per turn, Jenova dishes +1/+1 counters and turns a creature into a mutant, which not only helps her own ability: It also the new mutant a valid target to trigger Jason, since the +1/+1 counter will make its current power be different from its base power.

Like Jason Bright, Glowing Prophet, Jenova, Ancient Calamity‘s price wasn't affected too much by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The interesting story is, again, the huge number of copies traded, clearly signaling player's interest in the Mutant family:

And you can see this dynamic in other mutant staples: Agent Frank Horrigan‘s price hasn't moved last week, but its uptick in traded copies is pretty noticeable.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are already spiking some ninja cards above $10. The impact seems a lot milder with mutants so far… but when looking at how many copies were traded for some of the few cards that care about mutants, the interest is clearly there.

It's a bit of a risky gamble, though, given that we have no clue just yet about how big of a role mutants will have in the set – we know that the titular turtles, along with Splinter and Shredders, will be mutants, but we have only seen one TMT card that cares about mutants.

But between mutant turtles, and mutants like Wolverine, Best There Is being some of Marvel's most famous characters, it may not be too long a shot to think mutants will get a lot more love in the coming years.
