3 Ways to Break The Hobbit’s Cracked New Elf Commander

Thranduil, the Elvenking is the new Sultai elf commander from The Hobbit, joining a cadre that was exclusive to Maralen, Fae Ascendant up until now. Players are already praising it for being a strong elf commander, as it's a draw and discard engine fueled by legendary elves entering the battlefield. In fact, drawing two and discarding one each time they enter is no joke.

As long as we have some key elf creature cards in our graveyard, Thranduil becomes a key combo piece.

Let’s see how we can break the new Sultai Elvenking:

#1. Devoted Druid Combo

Devoted Druid is a creature that can give us infinite mana if we can get rid of its -1/-1 counters. To do so, we need to have a way to buff the druid’s power and toughness. Fortunately, we have elves like Timberwatch Elf or Immaculate Magistrate which are perfect for the job.

With all these on the graveyard, we can tap our commander, add mana, untap it with a -1/-1 counter, and tap it to put a +1/+1 counter on it. Not only will you get infinite green mana, but you'll also get a massive commander to beat your opponents down with.

Tyvar the Pummeler lets us turn the infinite mana from the combo into a win con, and we can use Staff of Domination on the battlefield for infinite card draw. Staff can also help you achieve infinite mana if you have Priest of Titania or [card]Elvish Archdruid, as long as you can generate more than three mana with each activation.

#2. Infinite Creatures Combo

We can also go the infinite creature route with Intruder Alarm on the battlefield and Imperious Perfect in the graveyard. Tapping Thranduil will give us a 1/1 token, which triggers Intruder Alarm to untap all creatures.

Rinse and repeat for infinite creature tokens and infinite ETB triggers.

#3. Graveyard Tutors

So, how do these creatures end up in our ‘yard? Besides all the self-mill and the draw/discard we can use, black has more direct answers in the form of tutors straight to the graveyard. Buried Alive is the best one because you can tutor your whole combo, but Entomb, Unmarked Grave, and even blue cards like Gifts Ungiven will also do the trick.
