Spoiler season for The Hobbit has officially begun, and we've already seen some insane new cards get revealed. Among them are a couple of cards that are insane combo enablers that make a lot of decks way more consistent, and you can even run one of them as your Commander!

The Master of Lake-town

The Master of Lake-town is an absolute combo machine thanks to its ability to make players mill cards whenever they lose life. This effect is very similar to Mindcrank, except that it works for yourself as well as your opponents. The combo with this effect is to have something like Duskmantle Guildmage or Bloodchief Ascension in play and simply make an opponent either lose life or mill a card, whichever is easier. Doing so will start a loop (as long as you've activated Duskmantle Guildmageโ€˜s ability or have enough counters on Bloodchief Ascension) that results in your opponents losing life and milling cards until they lose.ย

The Master of Lake-town is particularly good for this kind of combo, as it's an extra piece of redundancy if you don't draw Mindcrank, but it's also legendary so you can have it as your commander and make the combo way easier. Granted, since it's mono black, you can't play the Duskmantle Guildmage, but you can substitute it with something like Syr Konrad, the Grim or Dreadhound. These don't necessarily go infinite, but they will usually chain triggers together as long as you keep hitting creature cards. As if this combo potential wasn't enough, The Master of Lake-town also has deathtouch and can draw you up to four cards when it dies, overall making for a pretty absurd card.

Elven Raft-Steerer

Elven Raft-Steerer may seem like an unassuming card, but its effect is uniquely powerful. There is only one other card that can untap any creature when a land you control enters, and that's Retreat to Coralhelm which is an amazing combo enabler. It combos with cards like Knight of the Reliquary, allowing you to tap it to sacrifice a land and get a new one, which will enter and untap the knight allowing you to repeat for every single forest and plains in your deck, making the knight huge and giving you plenty of landfall triggers.

It also combos with any kind of creature that taps to put a land into playโ€“Sakura-Tribe Scout, Llanowar Scout, Scaled Herbalist, etc.โ€“and any land that bounces itself such as Simic Growth Chamber or Oboro, Palace in the Clouds to repeatedly tap the creature, bouncing the land every time to get infinite landfall triggers. Alternatively, you can use one of the creatures that tap to put a land into play with Meloku the Clouded Mirror and a Elven Raft-Steerer or Retreat to Coralhelm to make infinite 1/1 spirit tokens. Basically, these cards go infinite with a ham sandwich.

Wrap Up

We're still early on in the spoiler reveal schedule for The Hobbit, and I bet there will be more cards revealed that are great combo pieces; these are just the ones we have so far. That being said, these are effects we don't get often, and they offer much needed redundancy for otherwise fragile yet efficient ways to win the game. Do you think these combos are worth incorporating into your decks, or will you leave them out?
