Insane Green Mythic From The Hobbit Is An Instant Commander Staple

The Hobbit is almost fully revealed, and we've already gotten a lot of insane cards spoiled this week. But sometimes, there's a card that you can look at and immediately know it's a format staple, and we just got a card like that.

Dancing From Dark to Dawn

Dancing From Dark to Dawn is a fairly straightforward card. It creates a 2/2 green bear creature token for you whenever a land you control enters, and then it puts counters on your creatures when you cast creatures. Essentially, it just grows your board which is good, but it's certainly not unique in that regard. What is unique about this card is the rate at which it does it.

Getting a 2/2 for every land is a good effect. If you're playing a landfall deck, then you're probably happy to include cards like Felidar Retreat or even something like Eusocial Engineering. Now add on the ability to put a bunch of counters on a creature whenever you cast a creature spell, and suddenly you're cooking with gas.

Besides being good on rate, these abilities also synergize in an important way. You will often have creatures in play, but not always. Maybe one of your opponents casts Wrath of God and suddenly your board is empty. Well, if you already had Dancing From Dark to Dawn in play, just play a land to get a 2/2 bear, and then follow it up with a creature spell such as Colossal Dreadmaw for the sake of example, and put six +1/+1 counters on the token. Now you have an 8/8 in addition to the creature you just played. Because of the fact that you get a token with every landfall trigger, I find it hard to imagine a scenario where you won't have a target to put counters on whenever you cast a creature spell.

Double Up

Because Dancing From Dark to Dawn creates tokens and puts counters on creatures, you can start to think about including other cards in your deck that amplify both, specifically cards that double those effects. Doubling Season, Primal Vigor, or even Ferrafor, Young Yew which goes absolutely crazy with Dancing From Dark to Dawn in play.

In terms of what decks might want this card, I think it's safe to say that almost every single green deck will want this. Playing lands and casting creatures is something every deck will do, especially in green, and paying you off for doing what you already want to be doing is a recipe for a massive board that will win the game in just a few turns.

That being said, some commanders will want this card more than others. Xavier Sal, Infested Captain benefits from both of this card's abilities, turning bears into counters or counters into bears, whichever is more convenient for you at any given moment. It's also an obvious inclusion in any Ayula, Queen Among Bears as it creates all-important bear tokens. Speaking of bears, the brand new Beorn the Fierce is also a great choice for a commander if you're playing Dancing From Dark to Dawn. There are plenty beyond these, and I think there are likely more decks that want this card than there are that don't.

Dancing From Dark to Dawn is dead simple, and it's simply good. There's not much more to say about this card, other than it does pretty much everything you want a card to do in Commander. Will it be a staple of the format? It's quite possible–unless a card comes along and does the same thing better, it's pretty hard to beat this rate. Now, not every deck will want this, but the ones that do will really want it, and that's all a card needs to do to be good sometimes. I guess we'll just have to wait and see until The Hobbit comes out to know for sure, but I don't doubt that this card will be widely played.
