Lotus Petal โ€“ art by Slawomir Maniak

It's safe to say that no one was expecting a Sonic: The Hedgehog Secret Lair between sets. Nestled between the mega-success of Final Fantasy and negligible excitement for Edge of Eternities, the Sonic drop really got people talking: Shadow the Hedgehog blew minds the moment people saw it.

Players love mechanically unique Secret Lairs, but you know what we love even more? Uber valuable reprints with high collectability AND playability. Seems like Secret Lair nailed it this time aroundโ€ฆAlmost.

Gotta go Faster, Fasterโ€ฆWait Maybe That's Too Fast

In an unprecedented turn of events, it appears that several players have been receiving their Lairs early. Just a couple days ago, tons of people received this email in their inbox:

Secret Lair has traditionally been mired with shipping and order issues, so it feels uncharacteristically on point that things seem to be going out early. Redditors aren't fully convinced by the email though, u/FieryFruitCake said that โ€œConsidering im still waiting for my Final Fantasy and Frank Frazetta drop, Im not expecting my sonic commanders to arrive until October tbh.โ€

Some are speculating that the early shipping date is the result of some kind of logistical error on WotC's partโ€ฆbut a happy accident is a happy accident!

Regardless, people have been getting their stuff way early, and people are getting excited about the insane Bonus Cards of the set.

Big Bonus Card Hype

We did get our 14th Secret Lair Command Tower in the form of Master Emerald Shrine, which is fine and all, but people are absolutely freaking out about the Chaos Emeralds (Lotus Petals). Now that's some good value. In each Bundle there's a chance to get 1 of 2 Bonus Cards, and, as in all drops, not all cards were created equal.

Lotus Petal was first printed in Tempest in 1997. It's been reprinted 7 times since then. It's an insanely powerful piece across formats, I'm guessing we're going to be seeing tons of Chaos Emerald Underworld Breach decks soon. Despite receiving multiple prints, a base copy would run you about $20 at the time of writing. A Kaladesh Invention print would run you about $450. What about a Sonic the Hedgehog print?

Just How Rare Are These Dang Emeralds?

These Petals are exclusive to Sonic Secret Lair Bundles, so you won't be able to get one if you managed to secure a Friends & Foes pack. In each bundle, there's a 6% chance of finding a Chaos Emerald. As you can see pictured above, there are 7 individual treatments for these ultra powerful crystalline icons: Red, Blue, Light Blue, Green, Purple, and Clear. This could be a result of the aforementioned premature recipients, but prices are looking bonkers at the moment.

Several Chaos Emeralds have already made it to to eBay, and the cheapest is currently sitting at about $600. It's hard to say what these will even out to, but if these early prices hold, you're looking at a whopping $5000 to complete the set.

Still a far cry from the Neon Chocobos from Final Fantasy, whose value seems to just keep on going up and up. The Blue, Pink, Yellow, and Green are all going for roughly $2000. The Black is up to a ridiculous $8000 alone.

Wrap Up

We can't really say what's going to happen with the prices of the Chaos Emeralds, especially since all of the orders haven't shipped yet. Early hype always drives cards like these sky high. Several people ordered multiple bundles with hopes of opening up Emeralds, and to those who have done so, we hope that you don't end up with three new Command Towers!
