Magic: The Gathering Arena debuted on September 27, 2018. I remember making a Magic Arena account in 2019 when I was newly into the game and excited to learn and play more at home when I wasn’t playing with my friend or at my LGS in-person.

If you play MTG Arena, you may have wondered how many people are actually online every day. To answer your question: about 8,000 players log in to MTGA every day. Magic is a beloved trading card game worldwide, so you never know who you’re playing against when you log on to play.

Of the 50+ million total Magic: The Gathering players more than 13 million have an MTG Arena account. More traditional players prefer tabletop while others may prefer the buy-in on MTGO over MTG Arena.

Hasbro’s Official Numbers

According to Hasbro, Magic: The Gathering is their first $1 billion brand as of 2022 mainly attributed to the game’s popularity and success over the past three decades. The official numbers for Magic: The Gathering Arena state that there are more than 13 million registered players.

Comparing Hasbro’s official numbers of how many Magic Arena players there are, analyzing live player count trackers, and evaluating download records on smart devices can give a clearer picture on how many total players exist. While millions of players have an MTG Arena account, only about 50% to 70% of them are online at least one day on a monthly basis.

Steam Charts

MTG Arena players can download and play the game via Steam or directly onto their computer or smartphone without using Steam.

Steam Charts evaluates online players for MTG Arena through the Steam platform. These statistics don’t include individuals who play on their gaming laptop or smartphone without Steam. In late May 2025, the highest number of concurrent players online during the previous 30 days was 9,083 with an average player count of 6,242.7. This is a decent increase from the May 2024 stats of 8,543 peak players and 4,674.4 average players online for that month.

Google Play Store Downloads

According to Google Play Store, there have been more than 5 million downloads of Magic: The Gathering Arena on Android devices. Google's number is also unique user installs, meaning that 5 million unique Google Play accounts downloaded the game!

When it comes to smart device downloads from either Google Play Store or the Apple App Store, be mindful that player count may vary for many reasons.

Apple App Store Downloads

The App Store doesn’t give an approximate number of downloads from their platform like the Google Play Store does. While there are about 130,000 ratings for MTG Arena on the App Store from Magic Arena users, this doesn’t give us a good background on how many players there really are accessing the game from their Apple devices.

How Many Active Players Are There?

There are at least 7,000 players on Magic Arena daily, and that's just the Stream numbers according to ActivePlayer.io. The player counts vary widely between scheduled set releases with clear increases of about 3,000 players during the couple weeks around each release.

Is MTG Arena Growing or Shrinking?

The number of players on MTG Arena continues to grow year after year. The data from Steam on average players increases gradually month to month with gains on every set release and small drops between releases. It doesn't hurt that MTGA is free to start (though some say pay to win) and one of the handiest ways to learn how to play Magic.

How Accurate Are Live Player Count Trackers?

It’s difficult to gauge how many live players there are when Wizards of the Coast doesn’t publish those statistics. While active player count websites claim that they have all the information about how many people are playing MTG Arena, they don't entirely source their data so their figures should be taken with multiple grains of salt.

Live player count trackers are only accurate depending on how they are tracking the data. Steam is one of the few platforms that provides accurate player data.
