Arena Directs have their issues. Like, glaring issues. People not receiving the rewards they've wonโ€ฆ that sort of thing. And yet, the MTG Arena team keeps pushing more Arena Direct events on the client, around two events per new set cycle.

The first Final Fantasy Arena Direct is coming this weekend (June 20-22), and it's not structured all that differently from any other Arena Direct event. Except there's one stark difference this time around: The top prizeout, a Final Fantasy Collector Booster Box, is expensive, making the estimated value (EV) of participating in this event much higher than it's been in the past.

Not Just Any Booster Box

Here's how this Arena Direct event works:

  • Entry is 8,000 gems, and you can enter as many times as you'd like.
  • The format is Final Fantasy Sealed.
  • You can play up until you reach 7 wins or 2 losses, whichever comes first. As soon as you get your second loss, you're out.
  • Prizeout begins at 3 wins. From your 3rd win onwards, you'll receive an increasing number of gems and Arena Final Fantasy boosters per win.
  • At 7 wins, you'll receive a Final Fantasy Collector Booster box, which will be mailed to you.

The prize structure for the upcoming event is as follows:

  • 0โ€“2 wins: No rewardsย
  • 3 wins: 3,600 gems, 8 boostersย
  • 4 wins: 7,200 gems, 16 boostersย
  • 5 wins: 10,800 gems, 24 boostersย
  • 6 wins: 14,400 gems, 32 boostersย
  • 7 wins: 1 Final Fantasy Collector Booster box

As you can see, the near net-even point is 4 wins before 2 losses, though you'll definitely be battling it out for the 7th win to secure that coveted Final Fantasy Collector Booster box.

Not only is it a sweet prize and the top reward for doing well in an event, but this box is worth significantly more than the prizes that are usually given out. That's due to the bloated price of everything Final Fantasy right now, with this being the most hyped up and expensive Standard release to date.

Final Fantasy Collector Booster Box

Collector Booster boxes vary in price depending on the marketplace or outlet you're buying from, but Wizards already provided a quick note on the expected EV of a box, which they have marked at $455.88. That's the amount someone will receive if supply runs out for participants who reach the ultimate reward. Is that likely to happen? Maybe not, but then again, Final Fantasy was so big it crashed Arena the day it released due to the sheer number of people logging on to play.

Considering 9,200 gems costs $49.99 on Arena, a 7-win streak for this event is roughly net $400 in your favor, perhaps even more considering many retailers have jacked up the prices of these boxes to $700+ now.

There are some important caveats and notes to consider for this Arena Direct event. For one, the entry cost is more expensive than the usual event. Arena Directs increased from a 5,000-gem entry fee to 6,000 with Tarkir: Dragonstorm, and it was noted at the time that events for Universes Beyond products would increase that cap to 8,000 gems. That reflects the increased cost of UB products in paper Magic, and since the prize involves physical Magic cards, the entry fee goes up accordingly.

Second, there have been serious issues with previous Arena Direct events, namely continued problems with people not actually receiving the rewards they've won, or product taking an abnormally long time to ship. One would hope the Arena team and Wizards of the Coast would hammer these issues out before continuing with these events, but there's no sign of slowing down on Arena Directs. So at a bare minimum be wary that hiccups have happened in the past, and hope and pray it doesn't happen to you. Cross your fingers and aim for that seven wins!

There are a few more event details relevant for players outside the United States, and you can read up on the official Arena Direct announcement page for info on shipping, participation requirements, and so on.

Players can begin events starting on Friday, June 20 at 8:00am PST, and continue signing up all the way up until Sunday, June 22 at 5:00am PST. There's a 3-hour gap between the final sign-up time and the end of the event on June 22 at 8:00 am PST. The event is slightly shorter than previous ones, but not by a significant margin.
