The preview panel at Magic Con Atlanta has just wrapped up, and 2026's release slate is looking stacked. A major highlight of the panel was the newly announced Universes Beyond sets which are…absolutely gargantuan to say the very least.
Star Trek

Several months ago there was a “leak” that purported to be an unexpected Star Trek x MTG collaboration. Sadly, the leak was proven to be false…but it looks like it may have been a prophecy! In the wake of Edge of Eternities, we know that MTG does, in fact, work in space. We'll be getting Klingons, Vulcans, and the whole cast of characters from the beloved Sci-Fi hitting Magic: The Gathering in November 2026.
The Hobbit

Turns out we were exactly right.

Before it was usurped by Final Fantasy, Lord of The Rings was the best-selling MTG set ever. It's no surprise that we're getting new cards from the LOTR universe, but folks are definitely hoping for a The One Ring reprint. The panelists didn't reveal much of anything about the set, but they did note that their secrets were “precious” to them…I'm going to take that as a few points on the “One Ring reprint” score sheet! Maybe we'll even get a nontoken Smaug card
Marvel Superheroes

During the panel, Mark Rosewater (MTG's Head Designer) mentioned that it was difficult to do a Marvel set for a single character. While this was definitely a slight, albeit unintentional, dig at Spider-Man…he's got a point. Marvel is absolutely jam-packed with characters. Based on art displayed at the panel, it's safe to assume we'll be getting a gargantuan number of Legendary creatures in the Marvel Superheroes set.
Wait, What?! More Final Fantasy too?!

The prophecy of the leaks has come to pass, we're getting tons of new Final Fantasy cards in the form of Scene Boxes. FF15's includes a “create a token that's a copy of target creature you control” spell that can be cast at instant speed that also has flashback. Huge. FF1 gets a “party matters” card, a huge flavor win that was lacking in the initial FF release.
A truly staggering number of new Final Fantasy cards and treatments were spoiled, including the contents of the leaked chocobo bundle.

Each bundle will include 10 play boosters an incredible promo Birds of Paradise, a beautiful set of full-art lands, a clickwheel life counter, and two additional bonus cards from FIC and FIN with new treatments.
In Conclusion
Some of the biggest brands of all-time are coming to Magic in 2026. From tried and true Magic favorites like Lord of the Rings and Marvel, to unexplored territory like Star Trek, the next year is bound to be gargantuan for the game we love most.
