Spider-Byte, Web Warden | art by Thanh Tuan

Edge of Eternities released just over a week ago, and leaks for Spider-Man have already begun: But this time it was WotC's fault. You read that right. WotC ended up leaking the new Gwenom card by leaving it within the zip folder of product shots available on the WPN site. These images are meant for media and stores to use for their product listings, and somehow this blurry card image got left in.

The Leak Itself

Leaked Gwen Card

Here's the actual card text (as far as we can tell):

Gwenom, Remorseless 3BB
Legendary Creature โ€“ Symbiote Spider Hero
Deathtouch, Lifelink
Whenever Gwenom attacks, until end of turn you may look at the top card of your library and you may play cards from the top of your library. If you cast a spell this way, pay life equal to the mana value rather than pay its mana cost.
4/4

Bolas's Citadel

That's a pretty darn good Commander. Having Bolas's Citadel in the command zone is an incredibly powerful effect for five mana. It's a bit nerfed since you need to attack with Gwenom to actually enable the effect, and it can only be on your turn, but the consistency of having the card in play and potential reanimation angles probably make up for that.

Another fun way to think about Gwenom is as a voltron commander. You're already in the business of attacking to trigger the effect, and you could probably rip a few massive equipment or auras off the top before hitting a land. Aettir and Priwen, Ultima Weapon, and Excalibur, Sword of Eden would all pay for themselves after a single attack!

But Waitโ€ฆ How Did This Even Happen?

Mental Misstep | art by Kai Carpenter

WotC being at fault for this leak gives it ultimate authenticity, but it begs the question: what was this card doing in that ZIP folder to begin with? There weren't other card images inside it, just product art and promotional material. And if it got misclicked into that folder, then why was it blurry in the first place? These are the questions being asked on Magic subreddits.

However, one theory does make total sense, which is that this card is an alternate art version from the gift bundle. WotC normally shows off cards like this whenever they're an incentive to buy a separate product. The card is no longer on WPN, meaning they simply didn't intend to reveal it this early (hence the blurriness) but intended on revealing it eventually.

Is it possible that WotC was intentionally leaking a card to build up press and hype for Spider-Man? Sure, but in this case, it's more likely that this leak was just a mistake. After all, if you were intentionally leaking cards but didn't want people to think you were, why would you do it on your own website?

Will There Be More?

We're still a month and a half of way to Spider-Man, but this leak has put it back at the front of everyone's mind (sorry, EOE). And if it's anything like EOE, then we're certainly due for dozens of more leaks as the weeks go on.

So don't be surprised if we have more of these on Reddit from shops opening packs early or even WotC, apparently.

Look in the zip file for the backside of the gift bundle, which includes images of the contents inside. That’s the source of the card.
