Every once in a while, a card comes along that changes everything. Well, it looks like we got a card just like that in Star Trek, and combat won’t ever be the same for you if you’re running this as your Commander. Now that seems like a pretty lofty statement, and it is, but that’s how it’s going to feel when you’re playing with this card, because combat really, truly, will not be fair.

Kira Nerys, Firebrand

Kira Nerys, Firebrand is the type of card that you have to read a few times to understand exactly what it does. Basically, while you’re attacking during combat, any creatures you control that enter are also suddenly tapped and attacking. This means you can leverage a few different things to make this good. Any creature with flash or instant that makes a creature token turns into a surprise attacker.

Things like Ancient Stone Idol are perfect for this strategy, although almost any creature with flash will do the trick. Gandalf the White is also a great enabler for this deck, as doubling triggers and giving some of your other spells flash is a great way to make your attacks even more potent. One thing to note is that flicker effects like the kind we see on Restoration Angel are particularly potent, as they can come in attacking thanks to flash, exile one of your blocked creatures, and then return it immediately, which also makes it come in tapped and attacking.

The real sauce however is with token makers. Anything that triggers off an attack is premium for this deck. Rabble Rousing, Overlord of the Mistmoors, and Threefold Thunderhulk are all great options, although really there are too many good options to list.

Making Combat Impossible

The result of an effect like this in your Command zone is that it makes combat nearly impossible for your opponents. As long as Kira Nerys, Firebrand is in play, there is no such thing as a safe block. The really devious part about her is that if you can get creatures into play during combat but after blockers are declared, they can’t be blocked.

Similarly, like I mentioned before with Restoration Angel, flickering any blocked creatures will put them back into play tapped, attacking, and unblocked. And there are ways to make things even harder for your opponents.

Myrel, Shield of Argive and Voice of Victory are both great options, as they make tokens which get +1/+1 and they prevent your opponent from doing anything on your turn. The Wandering Rescuer is another good addition, as she has flash which is important as it lets her enter attacking, but she also gives all of your tapped creatures hexproof. Given that everything enters tapped and attacking, and it means that pretty much all of your stuff that matters is safe.

Wrap Up

Kira Nerys, Firebrand is exactly the kind of card that we want to see from a Universes Beyond set like Star Trek. It’s mechanically unique, it’s powerful but not unconditional, and most importantly, it’s not boring. A lot of the cards we’ve been seeing coming out of this set have been cookie-cutter designs. A token doubler, a counter doubler, a white commander with a a five color activated ability. All things that we’ve seen and have been done to death. But Kira Nerys, Firebrand is an entirely different kind of card, and it’s refreshing to see that.

I don’t doubt that she will be one of the most powerful and widely played cards from this set in Commander, likely second only to Q, Stacking the Deck. Ultimately, we will have to wait and see. What do you think? Does this card seem cool to you, and will you be making her your Commander, or do you think she won’t live up to the hype?
