I know it feels like we just got Reality Fracture, because we did, but Star Trek is already quickly on its way. Mark Rosewater, lead designer of Magic: The Gathering, released some teasers for Star Trek like he does with every set these days. Some of these teasers are quite interesting and some of them are… highly illogical.

Certain card designs are always more appealing than others. Tutors are one of these types of cards that always seem to turn heads, as there are few things as powerful as searching for specific cards out of your deck.
• A new card that lets you search for any number of cards in your library with its name
This alone is a fun hint, but combining what we know about Star Trek with another teaser we saw, and we can start to figure out what this card might be.
• Creature – Tribble
It seems like Tribbles will be popping up everywhere in your games, but that’s the trouble with tribbles, isn’t it? We can likely expect a tribble creature that searches your library for more, and that seems like a pretty flavorful design.
Speaking of other flavorful designs, how better to represent the character Seven of Nine from Star Trek Voyager than to make a card that sets its power and toughness to 7/9. At least, I’m assuming that’s what the card will be, and it would be very strange if it wasn’t the borg herself, or at least a reference to her.
• “CARDNAME’s base power and toughness become 7/9.”
In terms of other teasers we can figure out somewhat easily, there’s this one:
• A Star Trek ship cameos a mechanic that it shares a name with
Now, I’m a casual Star Trek enjoyer, by no means a hardcore fan, so I’m not sure exactly what this would be referring to, but after delving through the Star Trek Wiki, I was able to find one option: Constellation. For those of you unfamiliar, constellation is a mechanic that cares about enchantments entering the battlefield under your control, and it also just so happens to be a class of star ship.

Most of these teasers don’t point directly to what they might be, but they’re still interesting even if we can’t figure them out.
• A new card that can make you lose the game
• Some counters in the set: charge, finality, peace, promotion, and quest
• A new card that lets you play cards from outside the game
• A card that doubles your life total and the number of cards in your hand
• A card that allows you to survive at 0 life
These seem like some flashy effects, especially a card that makes it so you lose the game, and another card that prevents you from losing when you have 0 life. I’d love to see those cards in a deck together. Plus there’s something that doubles your life total and the number of cards in your hand, which has to be some kind of insane rare for Commander. Overall, quite exciting.
• “create a token that’s a copy of that creature, except it has changeling.”
• “If you would draw a card, draw two cards instead.”
• “if a triggered ability of that creature triggers, that ability triggers an additional time.”
Speaking of things that traditionally busted in Commander, clone effects, card draw doublers, and trigger doublers are all up there, and it seems like we’re getting all three in this set. The only thing we’re missing is a token doubler. Great Scott!

As always, we also get a load of card type lines. From these we can only figure out so much, but if anyone is capable, it’s the Trekkies among you that can… make it so.
• Creature – Wraith
• Creature – Whale Officer
• Legendary Creature – Vulcan Advisor
• Legendary Creature – Ferengi Noble
• Legendary Creature – Shapeshifter Detective
• Legendary Creature – Ooze Horror
• Legendary Creature – Romulan Human Rogue
• Legendary Artifact Creature – Android Rogue
And finally, a federation size fleet of random card names:
• Kobayashi Maru Scenario
• Live Long and Prosper
• The Measure of a Man
• Red Alert!
• Romulan Bird of Prey
• Rules of Acquisition
• Tea, Earl Grey, Hot
• Transporter Malfunction
• Vulcan Mind-Meld
• Warp Speed

Well, there might not be a better (or worse) card name in this set than Tea, Earl Grey, Hot. Ultimately, I’m not quite sure where to stand on the hype-o-meter for this set. Star Trek is a fun franchise, but I don’t think it quite meshes with what Magic is all about, and it seems like they might be leaning a little too heavily on the ham-fisted references. I suppose we’ll just have to wait and see until the set actually gets revealed. Are you excited for Star Trek?
