Bizarre Planeswalker Amass Ability Introduced in Reality Fracture Debut Stream

We just got an extended look at Reality Fracture, including a bunch of exciting new cards. Among the most exciting (and utterly strange) are the ones that reintroduce a classic mechanic…with a wild twist.

We knew that we'd be getting Planeswalker tokens…but we didn't know that we'd be getting an odd new “amass planeswalker” ability.

Empower Jace?

The new mechanic is called “Empower Jace”, and it's very similar to the amass mechanic. Introduced back in War of the Spark, amass either creates an army of a specific creature type (zombie, orc, etc) if you don't have one yet, or puts counters on an army if you don't have one yet.

Empower Jace gives you a Jace token, then puts a specified number of loyalty counters on it or another Jace token you control. Unlike amass, you always put loyalty counters on your Jace token after creating it.

It's a modest ability, but with all the Empower Jace cards floating around, these are sure to give you card advantage, especially in Reality Fracture Limited.

Planeswalkers in Limited

Historically, planeswalkers have been contentious in Limited. War of the Spark had a planeswalker focused Limited environment, and it was a grindy meta. With the presence of 3-mana planeswalkers, 2-mana plays were extremely important (and they're already vital in Limited).

Dealing with planeswalkers leads to an longer games. If your focus is suddenly on dealing with a pesky planeswalker, your focus drifts away from your opponent's life total.

It's been some time since War of the Spark debuted in 2019, so it's safe to say the WotC design team has had sufficient time to work out any kinks.

Empower Jace in Reality Fracture Limited

We already know that there will be at least 5 archetypes in FRA Limited: the 5 allied-color Hexhaven schools have relatively clear archetypal goals.

However…only 2 of them get access to blue: Theorix and Fatehold .

Does this mean that these two schools will get an unfair advantage? Well, not necessarily. We saw multiple cards in non-Theorix or Fatehold colors that have Empower Jace text.

As we can see, cards like Way of the Pyromancer bring MTG's bluest planeswalker to other colors. I think it's safe to say that Reality Fracture Limited will be a very splashable experience.

As a matter of fact, one of the best Empower Jace cards we've seen so far is in Simic , which most definitely isn't in a Hexhaven color identity.

Wrap Up

As we've seen in the past, planeswalker-focused Limited can be a slippery slope. Now that we have Empower Jace, you have to wonder, will any other planeswalkers get the same treatment?

Either way, we'll have to wait 'til Reality Fracture Prerelease hits on September 25th to find out.
