The Marvel Super Heroes reveal season is upon us, but since last night we've gotten more leaks and spoilers.

Thanos, the Mad Titan

The big bad man himself finally gets his card revealed, in the form of a mural on a wall in Australia no less. Thanos, the Mad Titan is an absolute powerhouse. For three mana, you get a 4/4 with deathtouch and lifelink, which is already way above what you usually expect to get its mana cost. Add on his ability, and it's lights-out for your opponents.

This ability is a Power-up ability, and as it states in the reminder text, it's an ability that you can only activate once, same as exhaust, but if the creature entered this turn, its cost is reduced by the cost of the creature, including color. In this case, Thanos costs one red, one white, and one black mana, so if he entered this turn, his power-up ability would only cost one colorless, one blue, and one green mana. So if you're playing this and activating its ability in the same turn, you're spending six mana to destroy several creatures and you also get a 6/6 with lifelink and deathtouch.

If you're getting really fancy with it, you can build your deck in such a way that you mostly have all odd or all even cost creatures, so when you activate the ability, you're not destroying any of your own creatures. Overall, this card is absurd, and I would not be surprised at all if it becomes one of the most popular commanders from this set.

The Astonishing Ant-Man

Next up is a hero of epic proportions: Ant-Man! This version of the card is an alternate art printing, and the quality of the picture is a bit low so it's a bit hard to parse at first glance. It costs one blue and one green mana, and it's a 1/1 that gets a +1/+1 counter whenever you draw a card. That can add up very quickly. It also has an activate ability that lets you remove counters from Ant-Man to make that many 1/1 green insect tokens. This is a self contained win condition, so beware if you're playing against this at prerelease. As for Commander, I see this as being a great part of any deck that cares about drawing cards or counters or tokens (so all of them basically) but it also looks like an amazing commander on its own. You don't have to do much to make this thing work, and I feel like it's going to combo with a ham sandwich. I'm just glad that Proft's Eidetic Memory is banned in Standard, because oh boy, these cards are scary together.

Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu

Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu is also here in his alternate art frame (ignore that triangle in the middle), and he's a 2 mana 2/2 with two really fun abilities. His first ability is just the same ability from Thousand-Year Elixir, giving all your creatures pseudo-haste for abilities only. This applies to himself, which is important because he also has an activated ability that lets him tap to add two mana that can only be spent on activated abilities of creatures. So if you have a creature with an ability that costs two mana, you can essentially play Shang-Chi for free, as you can tap it right away to pay for it. This seems more like an enabler in the 99 of Commander decks than a commander itself, but either way it's still exciting.

Don't underestimate this card in other formats either. It may take some work to find a deck that wants this effect, but it's so efficient at what it does that it's worth considering. An Agatha's Soul Cauldron deck for example will be able to leverage it to great effect, and I look forward to seeing how people build decks with Shang-Chi in mind.

Wrap Up

The Vision | Illustration by Carissa Susilo

These leaks are exciting, and we will likely see the regular versions of these cards officially revealed soon. Spoilers are starting today, Tuesday June 2nd, and they end on Friday June 5th. That's right, an entire set reveal condensed into a time span of a few days. Surely this must be the workings of Doctor Strange. Well, until then have fun watching the reveal stream and check in here to see all the coverage on spoilers.
