It’s no news that Magic’s Final Fantasy crossover has been a massive hit. This MTG set did exactly what Universes Beyond is supposed to do, bringing to Magic the cardboard versions of characters players already loved.
But even by Final Fantasy standards, Cloud, Midgar Mercenary is on another level.
The regular version of the card is already surprisingly expensive for something that isn’t tearing up Magic formats. And the top-end of its premium versions is really something else.
Through the Clouds

Cloud, Midgar Mercenary has never been a cheap card, even for the regular version. You can get a near-mint copy at around $20 for near-mint copies in the US market… and that's in spite of it this version of Cloud being a good, but definitely not amazing, card.
Cloud, Midgar Mercenary decks are very competitive in Duel Commander, or in the 99 with commanders like Phelia, Exuberant Shepherd or Quintorius, History Chaser. But it has never made the cut into competitive decks in 60-card formats, and it's only moderately popular in casual Commander (usually when Cloud's Naya version, Cloud, Ex-SOLDIER, is in the command zone).
Yet in spite of Cloud, Midgar Mercenary‘s lack of competitive punch or massive popularity, its cheapest version is still one of the most expensive new cards printed in 2025 (and even when including Secret Lair cards into the mix!)

And that's for the base, regular version…
Cloud's Pro Tour Premium Treatment
During the Pro Tour Magic: The Gathering—FINAL FANTASY, WotC gave each participant a non-foil borderless English-language Cloud, Midgar Mercenary promo card, with art from Tetsuya Nomura. And the Top 32 competitors received a traditional foil version.

And during the Magic Spotlight: FINAL FANTASY in Chiba, Japan, all participants received a non-foil Japanese-language copy (and the same art), while the Top 128 players received traditional foil copies.
According to listed prices, currently the non-foil version in English, from the Pro Tour, is a lot more expensive (at around $2,600) than the non-foil Japanese version from the Spotlight Series (listed at about $900). That's probably due to supply: Attendance to the Spotlight Series was roughly 7 times larger than the Pro Tour, so obviously there are a lot more copies in existence.

But that's pocket change compared with the foil version, which is listed at a silly $29,999.99 (although shipping is included!).

As Emma Partlow wrote for TCGplayer last year, exclusive Universes Beyond promos can “command serious value” when collectors start chasing every version of a crossover card. And even back then Cloud, Midgar Mercenary was “the most expensive MTG—FINAL FANTASY Promo card.”
Wrap Up

Cloud, Midgar Mercenary clearly doesn’t need to be the best card in Magic: The Gathering—FINAL FANTASY to command these prices. What it has it the “perfect storm,” so to speak, to be a very desirable collectible: A very playable card, with a beloved character, with art from Tetsuya Nomura. Plus the Pro Tour built-in prestige, and a tiny supply for the foil version.
Gotta give it to Wizards this time: they really nailed a premium version that really feels premium.
