At this rate, it feels like we're getting a new set every two days. Spoiler season for Edge of Eternities wrapped up just last week, Prerelease is tomorrow, and we're already vaulting into higher heights (slinging toward the skies, even).

We all knew that we'd get an early look at Spider-Man at San Diego Comic Con, but it looks as though we're getting a solid glimpse at what the set will hold even earlier than that. Several main set cards were spoiled out of nowhere yesterday, and then the Standard-illegal Welcome decks were also unveiled. The cards featured in these Welcome decks are on the weaker side, probably in order to literally โ€œwelcomeโ€ Spider-Fans without knowledge of Magic into the game.

Regardless of the cards' power level, these 30-card Welcome decks introduce a few new things to the game that are worth noting.

Web-slingin' Mayhem!

Keeping in-theme with Spider-Man's multiversal trends, we've got all sorts of wacky alt-arachnoids going on here.

We've also got a few variants that appear to be โ€œfixedโ€ versions of older mechanics. Web-slinging is comparable to Ninjutsu from Neon Dynasty, except you don't need to have an unblocked attacker ready. Mayhem is effectively Madness, except without any room for strange timing rules confusion.

Old Mechanics, New Costumes

Connive and Surveil are back on the menu. While we haven't seen Connive since Streets of New Capenna, Surveil has become a Magic mainstay as of late. Also, since Spider-Man Noir is in MTG, does that mean his voice actor (Nicolas Cage) is also now canonically MTG too?

Anyhow! We got a ton of Hero support from Final Fantasy in the form of โ€œJob selectโ€. While this ability does feel like it could work in Spider-Man flavorwise, especially with New York City as a backdrop, it makes sense that they didn't want to worry about Hero tokens in Spider-Man. Better to let named Legendary Heroes run free.

But what's a Hero without a Villain?

I'm personally holding on hope that we get a cooler Venom card, because this guy barely feels villainous. He seems like a crony at best. With tons more Marvel cards coming down the pipeline, it's safe to say that we'll be seeing a bunch more Villain support in the coming months.

โ€œI Need Pictures of Spider-Manโ€

Just how many Spider-people/robots/animals are gonna be in this dang set?! I guess we won't know until the full set reveals in September.

Spider-Pigโ€ฆis that you?!

Spider-Ham??? What?! I will admit, โ€œPeter Porkerโ€ is pretty funny. This thing seems really fun if you're trying to build an Animal-themed Commander deck, although I'm not fully sure what you'll be doing with those food tokens.

Is this one just pronounced โ€œSpiderโ€? Regardless, it's this freaky Artifact Spider-Man is a cool buildaround Commander in Azorius with a solid statline.

Aha! They printed a Spider-Man to keep Jund players in check. I'm sure that's not the sole reason, but Korvold, Fae-Cursed King players will shudder when this hits the board, and same with anyone ripping the Edge of Eternities World Shaper precon. Even though he's uncastable on your first three turns, Spider-Man 2099 will be a force to be reckoned with in Commander.

The most severe Spider-Man of allโ€ฆa 3/3 that costs a single mana in Whiteโ€ฆWotC, you've gone too far. In all seriousness, Legendaries at common is actually pretty cool. Could be fun in the rising Pauper Commander format.

Wrap Up

While it is a bit of a bummer that all of this Spider-biz is happening at almost literally the same time as Edge of Eternities Prerelease, a bunch of these cards look fun, and easy to play. Magic rocks, but is objectively very difficult to understand. These new Welcome decks could be a perfect way to get your non-MTG friends into the game. Whether or not you're a Universes Beyond believer, you gotta admit, Aunt May is probably one of the strangest Soul Sisters we've ever seen.
