Sonic The Hedgehog Secret Lair Incoming: 7 Unique New Cards

Sonic: The Hedgehog is sprinting into Magic: The Gathering. In the wake of the massive success of the SpongeBob Secret Lair, everyone's favorite ultra-speedy hedgehog (and his cast of animal friends) will be receiving a Secret Lair full of powerful new cards. Unlike the SpongeBob Lair, none of these cards are reskins of old classics, they're all new and mechanically unique. Hilariously, one of our writers totally called this one in January. We're psychics over here. Just kidding. Let's dive in:

Sonic and Shadow

Wow. Flash and Haste matter, very flavorful. Extremely grateful they decided to eschew “Max Speed” for all of these cards. It ramps, it goes fast, and it buffs your creatures. Perfect Jeskai shenanigans.

Easily my pick for coolest card of the bunch. He's fast, like his Hedgehog counterpart, except he draws you cards. Not only that? He can give all of your spells Split Second. I don't think we've ever seen this kind of effect before. Shadow the Hedgehog and Deadpool cEDH pod incoming?

Eggman and Tails

Is this guy's name Robotnik or Eggman? I always remember it being Robotnik…but maybe that means I'm an old timer. This Human Scientist is going to force your opponents to make villainous choices. This is the first time we've seen such a card instruct you to do so since Universes Beyond: Dr. Who.

Vehicles don't matter much to players it seems, but Robots and Constructs? AND card draw? Grixis players, you're going to love this one.

Everyone's drawing cards! Tails is another vehicles commander, an interesting choice. This is definitely the first time we've seen a Fox Artificer.

Knuckles and Amy

They did it. This Echidna Warrior is as red as they come. He's basically a power crept Professional Facebreaker, which feels like a flavor win. With Knuckles in the Command Zone, you'll be turning cardboard sideways like there's no tomorrow. That alternate wincon is sure to cause some trouble too.

Amy is a pretty straightforward Equipment commander. Not much to say here, although getting to attach an Equipment for free, and buffing another creature is a surefire way to close out games in one fell swoop, which can be difficult when running Equipment.

Super State

Hah! I will be running this card! Much like Amy, Super State is here to help you close out games even if you've only got one creature to swing with. 7-mana is too much, but this card truly can end games, if you've got the protection to make sure your creature doesn't get axed!

In Conclusion

I can only imagine this Drop will sell out at lightning speed in the same way Deadpool did. These are beloved characters, and many of their cards are really powerful to boot. With all these Legendary Creatures, this one seems to be focused on Commander players. I personally can't wait to give Shadow a shot, Split Second on any spell you cast with mana from an artifact? How'd a Hedgehog Warrior get an ability so strong?!

Regardless, we're excited for this one, and are hoping that the Bonus Card somehow has something to do with rings!
