Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds; to seek out new life and new civilizations; to boldly go where no man has gone before.

While it's still about half a year away, it seems like there's been a malfunction on the holodeck, or perhaps we've gone through a wormhole, because we've gotten a card revealed from the Star Trek Commander deck early.

Where No One Has Gone Before

Captain Kirk, Boldly Going (where no one has gone before) is part of one of the Commander products that will presumably be releasing alongside the main Star Trek set in November. As of right now, this is the only card we've seen, but there's still a lot to unpack here.

Firstly, we see a new creature type: Officer. This will undoubtedly be appearing on all the well known crew members, although it's otherwise unexciting.

Secondly, there is reference to Spacecraft. This is an artifact subtype we first saw not long ago in Edge of Eternities, a set with its own heavy sci-fi theme, and it makes perfect sense that this mechanic would return. Now, as this is a Commander card, it could be the case that this is the only card that will reference spacecraft. Although it makes sense that there would be spacecraft thematically, it's more so a question of set design. We'll have to wait and see, but I think chances are good that we get at least a couple of iconic spacecraft in the main set.

The last interesting thing about this card is that it makes direct reference to another card: Starship Enterprise. We can only speculate as to what Starship Enterprise will be, but I think it's safe to assume that it will be a spacecraft given what little we know. It's entirely possible that Starship Enterprise could be your Commander, which would be very exciting.

Also, you may have noticed that Starship Enterprise is italicized. This is not something that is typically done on Magic cards, not even when specifically referencing another card by name. Either this is just a change in card formatting, in that going forward this will be how other cards are referenced by name, or more likely it could be that the name of the card itself is simply italicized, similar to Sarpadian Empires, Vol. VII. Either way, it's something we don't really ever see, so it's worth noting.

Make It So

Well, we've seen Captain Kirk, but where's Jean Luc Picard? We really don't know if this set is going to focus on the original series or spread itself out to include the next generation and others, if not in the main set then at least in the Commander products. We could have a Doctor Who situation on our hands where they split up Commander products by eras of the show, with one being focused on the original series, one for The Next Generation, maybe one on Deep Space Nine/Voyager, etc. Again, only time will tell, but it would certainly make a lot of thematic sense for Wizards of the Coast to approach the Commander decks for Star Trek this way.

Live Long And Prosper

Beam me up, Scotty! I'm ready to hop aboard the Starship Enterprise, six months is just too long to wait for the rest of this set. We'll likely get a few more peeks between now and then, and hopefully we get to see Picard and his crew as well as Kirk and Spock and the other original series characters.

I think Star Trek exemplifies the very best of what Universes Beyond has to offer, at least in theory; it has long rich history of characters and stories to draw from, it's iconic, it's beloved by so many in the Magic community, and therefore expectations will be as high as can be. Hopefully Wizards of the Coast is aware of these expectations and will faithfully adapt Star Trek into Magic: The Gathering. I suppose we will just have to wait and see. Until then, live long and prosper.
