According to two controversial Reddit threads, the next wave of Final Fantasy x MTG Play Boosters won't arrive until the end of the year.

The notion that Final Fantasy is momentarily out of print does not seem totally implausible, with Magic journalist Corbin Hosler noting that โ€œprinters around the world are pretty pressedโ€:

Several posters have called the original claim into question, sometimes labelling it as a straight-up lie, and quoting sources from Wizards Play Network (WPN) who expect more Final Fantasy products to be available in July.

The Original Claim: Next Wave of Final Fantasy Play Boosters Won't Arrive Until Q4

Two different reddit posts, from two different accounts (both of which seem legit), posted two different screenshots of the same message, attributed to MVP Sports and Games:

While this section's first sentence seems a bit of a tongue-twister, it gives credibility to the idea that the message does come from MVP. We haven't independently verified that they are indeed the source, though. For what is worth, MVP does have a stellar track record on TCGplayer as a seller, and it's not 100% impossible that this is an elaborate hoax to frame them in a bad light โ€“ at least one redditor claims that they do regular business with them and have not received any message like the above. Furthermore, several buyers confirm that MVP is out of Final Fantasy stock at the time of writing.

In the following sections we'll dig into the claim as taken at face value.

Are Final Fantasy Play Boosters Still Available?

At least one of the large online Magic sellers, Card Kingdom, is also out of Final Fantasy Play Boosters at the time of writing:

And lots of Magic players shared anecdotes about their LGS running out of stock, and are having a hard time getting any more.

But Amazon still has FIN Play Booster Boxes left:

WotC has even confirmed that the Final Fantasy MTG set is being printed in huge volume, as reported by The Gamer two weeks ago quoting the set's executive producer, Zakir Gordon.

โ€œWhat is most important to us is that players can obtain the products they need to play and enjoy them,โ€ Gordon said. โ€œThis set is currently being printed in the largest volume ever, and we will continue to make efforts after its release. We will continue to take serious measures regarding play products, including not only the standard card set but also the Commander game. Don't worry.โ€

There are even rumors that it's the second wave of other MTG sets, like Tarkir: Dragonstorm, which are being delayed to pump out Final Fantasy boosters.

โ€œI was told that the vendor and distributors have all been made aware that restocks of Tarkir Dragonstorm and other in-print Magic products will be delayed by a month or more from their original schedule,โ€ wrote u/LordTetravus two months ago, stressing that this was not official info. โ€œThe sources had all heard the same alleged rationale/scuttlebutt as to why this was the case โ€“ that the printers had been diverted to additional printing of Final Fantasy on a rush basis due to Wizards realizing at the last minute that they could and should print a lot more of it to meet the seeming crazy amount of expected demand at launch.โ€

All of this still doesn't disprove the original claim: Even if there's still some remaining inventory from Final Fantasy's first wave of product, when will the next arrive to stores?

Counter Claim: Next Wave of Final Fantasy Products to Arrive in July

โ€œI've seen a lot of misinformation get spread by MVP over the years, but this one was more egregious than the rest,โ€ writes u/MotleyMoney on the MTG financial subreddit. โ€œThis is almost certainly an attempt at pumping the market.โ€

Source: Reddit

According to u/MotleyMoney, they โ€œContacted several WOTC connects, and our distribution reps and was told their Q4 update was simply untrue. It's now caused a disinformation spiral with some distribution reps at other distributors who are spewing this out without confirmation. Nelson has stated he'll be reaching out to clarify and try to stop the narrative.โ€

Several other posters confirm on X and reddit that the next wave of Final Fantasy product should arrive next month:

Conclusion

There certainly seems to be some hiccups in the distribution of Final Fantasy products, with at least one large online seller running out of stock and lots of anecdotal reports that FIN Play Boosters are hard to come by.

The original claim that there won't be another wave of product at least until next October seems off base, though. According to WPN sources, more FIN Play Boosters and FIC Commander precons should be made available in just a few weeks.
