Once again, a Secret Lair drop has resulted in the stock immediately selling out and those who were hoping to get their hands on it walking away disappointed. This time it was the Festival in a Box: Atlanta 2026 edition, which despite having a listed MSRP of $249.99 USD, it’s now selling on the secondary market for around $700 USD. But why this huge jump in price, and why does this keep happening?

Before we get into how and why, let’s talk about what exactly this product even includes to be in such high demand. For those of you unfamiliar, the Festival in a Box is a product that they release every time they do Magic Con, and it usually includes a play booster box of whichever mystery booster set they’ve done most recently. In this case, it’s the much sought after Mystery Booster: Commander Edition.

This set includes reprints alongside several new cards made for Commander with mechanics or designs that they really couldn’t or wouldn’t do in a normal set; cards like Tolabow, Loch Rascal, Whtz, the Bibliophile, or Arzakon.

Also appearing in the box is a handful of individual special promo cards, and suddenly it’s no wonder why so many people want access to this product. It’s exclusive, it’s different, it’s something you can’t really get anywhere in Magic, but unfortunately, it’s sold out.

Supply, Demand, and Execution

Within about twenty minutes of going live, the Festival in a Box: Atlanta 2026 Secret Lair sold out. Many people weren’t able to go to checkout despite waiting in the queue, and for those that did go to checkout, many of them still were not able to complete the purchase in time to finish the order successfully.

There are two problems here: One of execution, and one of supply and demand. For the first issue, there is no reason that this has to be the way things are done. If you have to wait in a virtual line, then it should function as such. Unfortunately, the reality is that more often than not, it’s more of a virtual free-for-all, as the concept of a queue is quickly lost when everything bottlenecks like it always seems to.

The biggest indictment of this system is the fact that this issue seems to happen every single time there is a high demand Secret Lair product. Speaking of supply and demand, this is a concept that I expect Wizards of the Coast to understand by now. It does not take a genius to realize that this is a product that will have high demand. It’s beyond me why they don’t create more product to satisfy that demand, but let’s assume they have their reasons. Perhaps they want to create scarcity in the secondary market for whatever reason, or they want the product to be exclusive.

Given that they know the amount of supply they have, then they should know that the demand will be extremely high. And high demand is what breaks online queue systems and makes things sell out in only twenty minutes. Ultimately there isn’t one simple answer, but there are a few things they could try that they simply haven’t bothered with, and the end result is always disappointment for the vast majority of the players who care enough to wait, and a thriving, perhaps predatory secondary market ready to resell at insane mark ups, in this case prices are hovering around $600 to $700 USD, while MSRP is at only $250 USD.

Wrap Up

Overall, this is a pretty big disappointment, although at the same time it’s also not that surprising. This is what we’ve come to expect, and Wizards of the Coast either doesn’t care to address it, can’t fix it, or doesn’t realize there even is a problem. In any case, change is needed, but I doubt it will come soon. Were you affected by this debacle? Will you be buying the Festival in a Box on the secondary market, or have you given up on dreams of having it? Let us know your experiences.
