โIt's being worked on,โ Senior Digital Product Manager at Wizards Dave Finseth told Ashlizzlle in an interview on Wednesday when asked if Commander was coming to MTG Arena. However, Wizards working on MTG Arena doesn't mean it's coming any time soon.
Why It Hasnโt Happened Yet
โThere's several challenges with adding it to the game. It's a giant task, I would say. When we built Arena we weren't thinking this was going to be a four-play game, we were thinking โhow do we make Standard,' โhow do we make Draft'.โ
It's easy to see the hurdles that Finseth is describing. Arena is purely a 1v1 client with a very limited card system (compared to Magic's total released unique cards). The first step to implementing Commander on Arena isn't even to add cards or the command zone functionality, it's figuring out how to pair 4 clients up, provide (and moderate) text chat or some kind of ping/communication system, and also enable all of the rules and interactions that could come from an entirely new way of playing Magic.
โThere's a lot of things that we almost call โฆ impossible design things we need to fix,โ Finseth said.
โThey're not actually impossible, but that gives an example of how much design work and engineering work we need to do. I also don't know if we'll ever have all of the cards. That's not even really I don't even think the goal. It's just to get to that four-player game mode that we're targeting.โ
Commander and Communication
Communication is one of the largest hurdles to bringing Commander to Arena. 1v1 Magic can be played without any communication between players online due to the rules of the game. Commander's social element is too involved and integrated into the play experience for this.
When asked about communication options, Finseth said that while they're exploring different options, WotC hasn't โfigured it out yet.โ
โI don't want to set poor expectations, but I would say yeah. That is a lot of the challenge and we are working on it.โ
Commanding Conclusion
This is the first time we've ever gotten official confirmation of Commander on Arena. Hasbro CEO Chris Cox has hinted about Magic's most popular (and complex) game mode coming to Arena before.
Despite this explicit confirmation, which is rare for WotC, we're still probably years away from actually getting a multiplayer game mode on Arena, let alone the entire cards (or the majority of playable cards, like they've done with Pioneer on Arena, or Vintage on MTGO).
