Well, it looks like Commander might be coming to Arena. At least, eventually. In Hasbro's most recent earnings call, CEO Chris Cocks had an interesting response when asked about the direction of Arena.

Direction Of Arena

The highlighted portions are specifically asking about the direction of Arena going forward, essentially asking if the recent announcement that there would be no more Through the Omenpaths was the extent of changes to Arena, or if there would be more.

I've aligned the highlighted portions by color to match up with the different parts of the question as best as I could so you can see what's being addressed in this response from Chris Cocks. The first part of the statement in purple is mostly addressing that, as previously mentioned, they aim to not have any disconnect between digital and paper Magic which was the problem with Through the Omenpaths/Spiderman.ย

However, the interesting part comes in the next part of his response. He makes a point of contrasting Commander to Standard as it pertains to Arena, stating โ€œI think the future, what you'll see from us as we invest in new digital iterations of Magic, both on Arena and outside of Arena, is leaning into those insights that have driven the overall ecosystem. More Universes Beyond, more collectibility, more tradability, and more social kind of multiplayer-oriented play.โ€œ

He qualifies this immediately afterward saying โ€œI think those will kind of roll out over the course of a couple of years. It'll be both from the Arena team as well as other talented teams that we work with.โ€

Insights

So what can we glean from this? Obviously it shows that Hasbro is looking at growing Arena, but nothing specific was said that was specific to Arena other than aligning digital with paper, in other words, getting licensing rights from Marvel. There were four other strategies mentioned, but they were said to be for โ€œArena and outside of Arenaโ€: Universes Beyond, collectibility, tradability, and multi-player play (Commander). However, in saying that they wanted to be โ€œleaning into those insights that have driven the overall ecosystemโ€, it seems to imply that this is certainly the direction that they want to take the game as a whole, Arena included.

There's a lot of corporate speak and jargon throughout this whole thing, but what matters is that as far as Commander coming to Arena is concerned, it's at the very least something that's on Hasbro's radar, and at best it's something they're actively aiming to implement. That's as close to a confirmation of Commander coming to Arena as we're going to get at this time.

As for a timeline, there isn't one; โ€œover the course of a couple of yearsโ€ could really mean anything. That being said, Hasbro is a company whose goal is to make a profit, and right now it seems like growing Arena by adding Commander is a way to do that for them. Commander is the most popular format and it seems like they think it's the best way, or at least a very good way, to grow the game, and despite not outright saying that their goal is to bring Commander to Arena, I don't doubt that it's a real goal for Hasbro to do so.

Implementation

One big reason that they may be abstaining from confirming anything at this time is because there are likely some issues in terms of implementing Commander into Arena. The Arena client was designed with two-player gameplay in mind. Doubling the number of players introduces all kinds of issues, both in terms of the actual coding and implementation of changes to the client itself, as well as designing a system that works for the end user. At any rate, these are huge changes, and implementing them will likely involve a lot of moving parts and a lot of clashing priorities. Perhaps this is why Cocks had such a vague estimate in terms of timeline, as they likely don't know the timeline themselves. It's really just a matter of how much they are prioritizing this, assuming they are aiming to implement it. If it's a high priority and they are given the resources to make it happen, then it will happen soon rather than later. Otherwise, it may take a while.

Wrap Up

Technically, this was not an announcement of anything. But it was a peek into how Hasbro sees Magic: The Gathering. It seems like Commander is the present and future of the game to them, and they seem to want it on Arena, even if they don't confirm it outright, and until they do, we can only wait for an official announcement, hopefully one that comes sooner rather than later.
