This New Goblin Token Maker From The Hobbit Is The Real Deal

Spoiler season continues for The Hobbit, with plenty of new and interesting cards to be revealed. At least, for the most part they're new and interesting–however some cards are interesting but not exactly new, but more so updated for a new generation. Today we got a card like that, an iteration on a classic but with some important differences that make it special.

Bothersome Noisemaker

Bothersome Noisemaker is one of those cards that you have to read a few times. The first time you look at it, it doesn't seem all that special. Then you read it again and you realize it's basically Young Pyromancer or Third Path Iconoclast, except it's Amassing instead of going wide with tokens. Is that better? Plus you're making a goblin token, that has to have some kind of upside, right? Is this card even good?

There isn't a straightforward answer to these questions. What I can tell you for certain is this: Bothersome Noisemaker has huge potential.

Goblin Combos

Amassing goblins is a super important part of this card, as it creates some very powerful combos. One is with Skirk Prospector, which lets you sacrifice a goblin for mana. Since the token you amass with Bothersome Noisemaker is a goblin, you can sacrifice it to the Skirk Prospector and make mana every time you cast a noncreature spell. If you're changing together a bunch of cheap red draw spells (or impulse draw spells), you can very quickly get your storm counter up for something like Empty the Warrens which will give you even more goblins to convert into mana as needed, or alternatively you can just cast Grapeshot and win the game on the spot if your storm count is high enough.

Another interesting combo with this card involves another brand new card from The Hobbit, The Great Goblin. It deals 2 damage to an opponent whenever you put a counter on a goblin, and so with Bothersome Noisemaker and The Great Goblin both in play, every noncreature spell you cast will amass goblins, which puts a counter on a goblin, which means you deal 2 to your opponent. That's a fast clock to be presenting to your opponent, and it's something they will have to address if they don't want to lose.

Goblins In Standard

With all the goblins we're getting in this set, it's starting to look like there may be a viable goblin deck in Standard, perhaps even more than one. If so, there's a good chance that Bothersome Noisemaker is part of the recipe. It isn't even the only goblin that cares about casting noncreature spells, as Molten-Core Maestro is also a two mana 2/2 that wants you to be casting a lot of spells. It's not hard to imagine a spell-focused goblins deck with these two alongside Grub's Command and some other role fillers. Again, there are enough pieces in the format to take this different ways, so it's just a matter of tinkering around and finding the right build, but I don't doubt that something viable exists.

This could even be something including the aforementioned combo with The Great Goblin, including cards such as Lasting Tarfire to quickly burn out your opponent just by casting spells and making goblins.

Overall, at the very least Bothersome Noisemaker is an interesting card. It's the kind of card that has enough potential to be considered in a lot of places in a lot of formats, as getting a token (or a +1/+1 counter) every time you cast a noncreature spell is something that often can't be ignored. The fact that it has good synergy with a lot of goblin cards is a nice bonus, and it makes for a well rounded card that I wouldn't be surprised to see make appearances in decks across formats. But until it comes out, we'll just have to wait and see.
